The Last Safari

"Zimbabwe is at a crossroads, and the welfare of its game and its people are inseparable. If you care about one you must see to the needs of the other." Bruce vanbuskirk

The reviews are in!

"I finished reading “The Last Safari” yesterday.  In a word, brilliant!..."

D.Rimkus, Bass Pro Shops

"As a person who has been to Africa several times, when I read this book I found myself right back their again. Some of the hunting adventures mirrored my own experiences and were told with a passion only a hunter who has been their could weave. Whether you have been to Africa or are dreaming about it, this book will get you fired up!"

Rob Trott, Executive Producer, Great Lakes Outdoors Television

"As a consumer of African safari literature and a big game hunter as well, I found "The Last Safari" a great account of what happens behind the scenes of a safari camp. From tracking wounded game to hauling water, killing snakes, dealing with corruption and local politics, this book exposes the truth of what it takes to stage a successful safari season. Well done!"

Buck McNeely, Outdoorsman International

If the storied writings of Capstick, Ruark and Hemingway's Africa fascinate you, "The Last Safari" by Bruce VanBuskirk should whisk you away to the legendary wilds of the "Dark Continent" in all its glory, tragedy and dangers. However, what makes this book unique is the author takes you behind the scenes of the hunt and reveals a world that precious few hunting clients and "outsiders" ever know about or are privy to. Even non-hunters will enjoy it for its accurate slice of what much of Africa is like today.
The author, who previously had hunted Zimbabwe on three occasions, returns there to spend the entire season working for a large and successful safari company. His experiences reveal a country of paradoxes and turmoil, of dangers and rewards, and of a constant challenge to satisfy clients under less than ideal circumstances. Whether the challenges are the almost daily equipment breakdowns and maintenance, marauding elephants, wounded and dangerous game, deadly snakes, poachers, discontented natives or government red tape, the author tells it like it was, and still is. He also takes us on every hunt, the outcomes of which are often as unpredictable and potentially violent as is everyday life there.
Written in a free-flowing and enjoyable manner, the author's gifted style creates a vivid mental imagery for the reader as entertaining and consuming as though viewing a motion picture. If you think you knew what an African safari was, whether you've been on one or not, this book will enlighten, entertain and educate you to the reality. Or as the author repeats a favored saying there when strange things occur, "It's Africa, baby!"

Updates on Kirk and Dylan!

After fighting the urge to leave for years Kirk has given up on the politics of Zimbabwe and moved his family to Australia. He no longer hunts for Tshabezi but will return to Zimbabwe each year to hunt for his brother Carl, mostly for elephant. Kirk is hoping to set up some hunting in Australia once he's established. His brother Carl can be emailed for hunt information.

Dylan

Dylan is now working as a fully licensed PH in Tanzania for ZukaAfrica, the same outfit that Mark Sullivan hunts for. He also conducts hunts in various other African countries and can be reached directly by email. He now proudly carries a Kreighoff .470 double, and has a great reputation with his clients.

In the tradition of Peter Hathaway Capstick, this is the true story of an American hunter who spent the 2001  working on safari in Zimbabwe.

Filled with fascinating characters, adventure and excitement, it also deals truthfully with the hard lessons learned about the future of hunting in Africa. This is a day by day description of the events, places and people who make the safari industry work in Zimbabwe.

If you're tired of reading the same old books from the professional hunting writers, stories filled with technical details but no passion for the hunt or for Africa, then this is a book for you.

If you want to know what happens behind the scenes in order for a safari to occur, then this is a book for you.

You'll travel the bush with the author, getting  to know the professional hunters and clients, company employees, local villagers, and learn just how much work it takes to run a safari operation in a third world country.

Fuel shortages, poaching, war vets seizing property, broken rifles, snakes, charging elephants, and wounded buffalo were all in a day's work. This is a rare look at the behind the scenes efforts to make a client's dreams come true.

this deluxe paperback features 390 pages of non stop action, observations on the current political situation in Zimbabwe, as well as the stories of citizens forced to deal with the realities of life in Africa. Illustrated with over 70 images.
